Let Google Send Your Clients

How to get new clients from Google.

This is a fun subject to me, because it gets the competitive side of me going. Getting to the top of Google is a race for being the best.

I'm living in a small town, and it's not difficult to find the best hairdresser for men in our little town. Ask most people, and they give you directions to the same hairdresser.

Being the best website on the internet is in some cases to be the best in your area, that is if your business is area bound. Search for 'hairdresser in Parys', I found one directory listing, with only a phone number. (Parys is the a small town in the Free State, South Africa.)

When I searched for 'hairdresser in Paris', it was a completely different story.

The logic is that any hairdresser in Parys would find it very easy to get to the top of Google. A hairdresser in Paris must be extremely good to out perform the competition.

The nature of your business and your industry determine how easy it would be to dominate Google.

Answer a few easy questions about your business and your industry:
  1. Are you area-bound, national or even global?
  2. Do your competition use the internet for their marketing?
  3. Do your competition have large websites, with lots of information?

The easiest way to get to Google's top, is to give more and better information than any of your competition.

The second main consideration is to make your website popular amongst other websites. Let people talk about you and have links back to your website.

By having more links and more information, Google will pick your website up and move you to the top.

One more thing that you can do to keep Google's attention, is to constantly add new and fresh information. In the world of search engine optimisation or search engine marketing, content is king. Every time you add new content, Google sees that you are working on your website to keep it up to date and relevant.

Understand how people use the internet.

The people you want to get to your website, are everyday people like you and me. They are looking for the same things we are looking for.

People use the internet for a couple of reasons. They want to research subjects or products and services. When I want to buy a new fridge, I firstly go online to compare different brands with each other before I buy.

Or sometimes I want to get the latest news. When Japan was hit by that massive earthquake, I went online to get the latest news.

Most of the time, I'm busy with some kind of DIY project. This is one of my hobbies. Rather than to buy a wind turbine, I'm researching it how to build one. In this kind of research, I'm looking for manuals, electrical wiring schematics, etc.

At rare occasions, I use the internet for entertainment. Then I spend time on Youtube searching for funny videos. Or I hang out on Facebook, catching up with my friends.

Rarely does an advertisement on the side catch my attention. What do get my attention, is the results on the first page of Google. This is true for most internet users.

How to get to Google's first page.

Keyword Research.

You need to give people what they are looking for. And you need to give people much more than any individual are searching for. One person are looking for advice about one area of your business, another are looking for something else. Give to everyone what they possibly want.

There is sometimes a huge difference between what you think people want and what they really want. Ask them, do a little market research, and then you will know better what they want.

Google has a great tool to see how many people are searching for any given keyword, or keyword phrase. If you search for 'Google keyword tool', you'll find it. Next, copy and paste each of these keywords into Google's search box. This will show you how many other websites use this same keyword. If there are a lot of people who search for a specific keyword, but there are very little other website that is optimised for that keyword, then use it first. Look for high search volumes and low competition. On these keywords, you'll quickly get to Google's first page. When there is high search volumes, and high competition, it harder to get to the top. With too low search volumes, you waste your time, no matter whether there is high or low competition.

Useful Information.

When you identified the keywords that people are looking for, write different types of content around these keywords. Articles, how to instructions, top ten tips, book reviews, product comparisons, etc, are great for content creation. Remember, that we are talking about written content, not audio or videos. Search engines can read only written content. They have no way to scan and index videos or audio's other than what is written around these media.

There are two place to publish this articles or how-to's you've just written. First publish some of it on your website. Secondly, publish some other on other websites. I personally prefer to use EzineArticles.com. This is a popular website, and Google index their articles often in the higher positions.

One of my mentors, dr. Hannes Dreyer, gave me this piece of advice, to write two articles about the same keyword. Publish one article on your own website and the other on EzineArticles.com.

Tell the World about your Website.

Before Google will notice you, other people will have to notice you first. When enough people noticed you, Google will catch up on the this new kid on the block. But, it's up to you to tell the world about you.

You do that with Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, online directories, and forums. Everytime you talk about your website and the great content you published there, put a link back to your website. Better yet, put a link back to the relevant article.

Google can only find you if there are links showing to your website. Google never goes on the roads that doesn't exist. Google is not an explorer who finds new uncharted territory. It only goes to a place if a lot of people say it's nice there.

Here's a small tip – always chart your website with a sitemap. A sitemap is a webpage with links to every page in your website. It's best to have a link to your sitemap on every page of your website. This way, it doesn't matter where Google's little spider enters your website, it will find and index every page on your website.

Youtube is a nice place to link back to your website. Videos' popularity increase every day. People love to spend time on Youtube. Upload a couple of videos with the best keywords in the title of the video. In the description of the videos, add a link back to the relevant page on your website.

They say that everything is bigger in Texas. The same is true when you want to dominate Google. Bigger and better is better. When people find you constantly on Google's first page and return often to your website for great advice, they will more likely turn into paying customers.
